Duckfat’s good for you.

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Duckfat, Portland, Maine.

Good for your soul, good for your appetite, especially if you’ve eaten at Duckfat in Portland.

And perhaps even good for your health. According to D’Artagnan, duck fat’s low in saturated fat and has a good mix of poly and monosaturated fats. So it’s more like olive oil than butter.

Duckfat, the restaurant, is the baby of Rob Evans, the James Beard award winning chef of the famous Hugo’s, just down the street.

Evans moved to Portland in 2000 after working at The French Laundry in Napa for the talented Thomas Keller, and at the Inn at Little Washington.

Duckfat has a simple menu and features what could be the very best Belgian fries this side of the pond.

If you sit at the two tiny tables outside, you’ll have a view of the Jordan Meats factory, which is being torn down for a new condo developoment. (This was taken before the recent fire.)

Rolling sushi.

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Abundant, and exquisitely fresh fish and produce makes Maine the ideal place to enjoy sushi. At the Maine Fare, foodie event in Camden a couple of weeks ago, the very popular Suzuki’s Sushi Bar in Rockland demonstrated how to roll sushi. Looks really easy!

It was a drippy, July day. Fried clams sounded just right. And they were much more than that, at The Boathouse in Rockland. The dessert was the panoramic view.

Thanks to @danamoos for the recommendation.

The Boathouse, 58 Ocean Street, Rockland, is open seven days a week. Lunch is served from 11:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. and dinner from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. On Sunday, in addition to regular dinner hours, the restaurant offers brunch from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. 207-596-0600.

Working up an appetite for Fried Ice Cream.

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Here’s another reason to visit Point Lookout – the recently opened Copper Pine Cafe. It’s just across from the fitness center and might be the perfect antidote for a workout.

The chef, Royce Wright, knows his way around a kitchen.

Originally from the very foodie San Francisco Bay Area, and very happy to be in Maine, Royce has operated a couple of tasty restaurants in Rockland — The Park Street Grille and The Union Station Grille. He had a cooking show in the 90′s and is currently writing a cookbook. Open for breakfast and lunch, he’ll be happy to prepare something delicious from the menu below.

Chasing the harvest.

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

The harvest is in at Chase’s Daily in Belfast.

The Chase family runs this very popular restaurant/farm stand/art gallery and bakery in the center of Belfast. It’s both hippy and hip, with a bit of New York Soho flavor.

They grow most of the luscious fresh vegetables at their farm in Freedom. And they cook up very tasty vegetarian fare in this gorgeous brick building. Even non-vegens are happy to hang out here. You’ll find fine cheeses and coffee as well. They were recently featured in a story in the Boston Globe.
