The Camden Windjammer Weekend, and especially the Build-a-Boat Contest and Race, was lots of fun last year, where kids got to build a boat and then race it in Camden Harbor.
Happily, it’s on again this year with all kinds of clever events — contests for kids, a puppet show, a boat parade, an outdoor concert, drawing classes, a Lobster Crate Race, the Build-a-Boat contest and race, and even a Schooner Crew Talent Show.
Besides just plain having fun, you’ll learn lots about the history, arts, crafts, skills, food and wild stories that accompany the beautiful Windjammers you see all over the coast of Maine.
Here are some links: — to photos taken last year — to this year’s schedule of events.
This time of year can be gorgeous, as the cold air rustles up big clouds and the light comes in from a much different angle.
Even the sky is bursting with color during this season. This was last night’s sunset.

The New York Times covers Maine quite often. Today there is a travel piece on the Windjammer Angelique, with a nice slide show, that gives you a bit of the taste of being onboard.
A windjammer is defined as a merchant sailing ship. And these days the merchandise they carry are tourists who want to see Maine from the water. When these ships were first carrying cargo, they never dreamed that the cargo they carried would actually help sail the ship!
More info on the fleet can be found at the Maine Windjammers Association website. And you might like to read our interview with Aaron Lincoln, Captain of the Schooner Olad.
