Here are a few nice reasons to visit the Farmers’ Market in Camden.

It’s located behind the Knox Mill, in downtown Camden, every Saturday, 9 – Noon, through October 30, and every Wednesday, 3:30 – 6 pm, through September 29.

You’ll find lots of farmers’ markets all over Maine. Our growing season is short, but our plates are full.

Good for your soul, good for your appetite, especially if you’ve eaten at Duckfat in Portland.

And perhaps even good for your health. According to D’Artagnan, duck fat’s low in saturated fat and has a good mix of poly and monosaturated fats. So it’s more like olive oil than butter.

Duckfat, the restaurant, is the baby of Rob Evans, the James Beard award winning chef of the famous Hugo’s, just down the street.

Evans moved to Portland in 2000 after working at The French Laundry in Napa for the talented Thomas Keller, and at the Inn at Little Washington.

Duckfat has a simple menu and features what could be the very best Belgian fries this side of the pond.

Here’s one dressed up in the truffle ketchup.

If you sit at the two tiny tables outside, you’ll have a view of the Jordan Meats factory, which is being torn down for a new condo developoment. (This was taken before the recent fire.)

Duckfat is tiny but chock full of delicious.

When it comes to coffee, the Northeast is finally putting some heat on the Northwest.

This rustic structure just across the street from Dot’s Market in Lincolnville Beach is evidence of this steamy trend.

Green Tree Coffee and Tea isn’t the first, or the only, coffee roaster in Maine. But it may be the newest. Welcome!

In the front of the shop and you’ll find all the gadgets necessary for brewing your own delicious cup of coffee. Along with a wonderful selection of their gourmet whole beans, roast, ground, flavored coffees, and interesting teas.

Their beans are imported directly from all coffee growing areas of the world, and arrive in these wonderful burlap bags.

The roasting happens in the back of the shop. Small batches are tested in this small roaster to determine the best method for each batch of beans.

Then once the roasting formula is chosen, the batch of beans goes into this large roaster. Mmmm, must smell so good!

Green Tree started in New Orleans but smartly found it’s way to Maine. We’re so glad they did. And it’s great to see the 04849 zip code becoming so popular.

Now only if they would serve cups of coffee (they have no plans so far to do so.) And it would be great if they would post their roasting schedule so we could come by to watch, and enjoy the aromas.
