Wasses Hot Dogs, Rockland, Maine.

What started as way for Keith Wasse to pay for college in 1972, has turned into a classic Maine tradition.

He gave up on college, but has earned a Phd in Classic Hot Dog. (Which just might be much more valuable than many other high priced degrees!)

Micucci Deli, Portland, Maine

This classic Italian Deli was started by Leo & Iris Micucci in 1950 on Middle Street in Portland.

The business catered mostly to what was at the time, Portland’s “Little Italy.”

Micucci

Mr. Micucci was one of the first to supply Maine’s pizza shops, which included Angelone’s in Portland, Luiggi’s in Lewiston and Pat’s Pizza in Orono.

The ‘Sicilian Slab’ that can be found in the back of the shop gets rave reviews, even on Yelp.

Duckfat’s good for you.

Duckfat, Portland, Maine.

Good for your soul, good for your appetite, especially if you’ve eaten at Duckfat in Portland.

And perhaps even good for your health. According to D’Artagnan, duck fat’s low in saturated fat and has a good mix of poly and monosaturated fats. So it’s more like olive oil than butter.

Duckfat, Portland, Maine.

Duckfat, the restaurant, is the baby of Rob Evans, the James Beard award winning chef of the famous Hugo’s, just down the street.

Evans moved to Portland in 2000 after working at The French Laundry in Napa for the talented Thomas Keller, and at the Inn at Little Washington.

If you sit at the two tiny tables outside, you’ll have a view of the Jordan Meats factory, which is being torn down for a new condo developoment. (This was taken before the recent fire.)

Green Tree Coffee Roasters, Lincolnville Beach, Maine

When it comes to coffee, the Northeast is finally putting some heat on the Northwest.

This rustic structure just across the street from Dot’s Market in Lincolnville Beach is evidence of this steamy trend.

Green Tree Coffee Roasters, Lincolnville Beach, Maine

Green Tree Coffee and Tea isn’t the first, or the only, coffee roaster in Maine. But it may be the newest. Welcome!

Green Tree Coffee Roasters, Lincolnville Beach, Maine

In the front of the shop and you’ll find all the gadgets necessary for brewing your own delicious cup of coffee. Along with a wonderful selection of their gourmet whole beans, roast, ground, flavored coffees, and interesting teas.

Green Tree Coffee Roasters, Lincolnville Beach, Maine

Their beans are imported directly from all coffee growing areas of the world, and arrive in these wonderful burlap bags.

The roasting happens in the back of the shop. Small batches are tested in this small roaster to determine the best method for each batch of beans.

Then once the roasting formula is chosen, the batch of beans goes into this large roaster. Mmmm, must smell so good!

Green Tree started in New Orleans but smartly found it’s way to Maine. We’re so glad they did. And it’s great to see the 04849 zip code becoming so popular.

Now only if they would serve cups of coffee (they have no plans so far to do so.) And it would be great if they would post their roasting schedule so we could come by to watch, and enjoy the aromas.

Be sure to ask them about their custom, personalized, roastings.

Dots, Lincolnville Beach, Maine.

From the road, you’d never guess what’s inside this very plain building in Lincolnville Beach, near the Islesboro ferry.

Even the sign doesn’t give you a clear idea, other than you can pick up a cup of coffee and something to eat.

So you’re in for a wonderful surprise!

Dot’s Market is a fabulous new foodie resource in Midcoast Maine. It’s named in honor of the grandmother of the owner, Melissa Carr. And they both appear to like the iconic retro candy.

Melissa’s mother, just happens to be the very talented woman who pioneered the well-loved Market Basket in Rockport on Route One and 90.

The 20th Annual US National Toboggan Championships glorified the spectacle of winter sports, but required a certain attitude.

Ski bench, Orono, Maine

Built for speed, these benches, made out of materials meant to blaze down mountains, are now frozen in time.

Burton bench, Orono, Maine

And provide a pretty cool spot to enjoy fast (or slow) food.

Ski bench, Orono, Maine

They’ve come to a full stop right in front of Verve, in the University of Maine’s town of Orono. And are the fantastic handiwork of one of the talented employees – - Matt Miller. His raw materials came from friends and the Ski Rack. Sure hope he got a nice raise!

Known for their burritos, Verve is run by Abe and Heather Furth, (UMaine alumni,) and has been reviewed by the delightful MaineMaven.

Don’t waste any time racing over to see what’s cooking.
