Stand back, spring begins in Maine.
March 11th, 2010Making waves.
March 10th, 2010L.L.Bean should hire this guy.
March 2nd, 2010
Foster Huntington, sounds a bit like a law firm, but is actually a student at Colby. (These are all his fantastic photos!)
He’s a young man from the Northwest, who studys in Maine, and publishes a very stylish blog called “The Restless Transplant.”
Which seems to indicate that he’s not going to be in Maine too much longer.
But it’s pretty clear that Maine will accompany him wherever else he goes.
His blog reveals the life of a college student discovering himself, honing his new skills (great photos!) and absorbing the world around him. And he naturally understands how to build a ‘brand.’
He loves the stories behind what he perceives as the Maine ‘lifestyle.’ He loves clothing. Especially old clothing. He has great style. And he’s very fond of the color red.
Go take a look, and discover the Maine you know is there, but sometimes you don’t see.
And remember his name — Foster Huntington. Have a feeling it’ll be popping up somewhere fancy, if not on a label, in the not too distant future.
Maybe even at L.L.Bean.
Hypnotic seaweed.
February 23rd, 2010In Maine, even seaweed is beautiful. Click here to see the larger version of the video.
3,000 miles of rocky coast, clean water, and the large tidal flow make Maine very seaweed friendly.
Seaweed is a $7-billion global industry. It’s used for food, fertilizer, chemicals, even medicine. Maine’s entrepreneurs are taking notice.
As if lobster wars weren’t enough, now the seaweed battles have begun.
Photos on ice.

It was so cold the first part of February that these sculptures were in pretty good shape more than a week after they were carved.

Shot on February 8, these photos show some of what remained of the Ice Sculpture event at Winterfest, held in Camden’s beautiful amphitheater, on January 30.

More proof that fun in Maine’s winter is endless.

Tobogganoids.
February 13th, 2010Fingers were freezing, video camera was jittery, global warming was not evident, but the US National Toboggan Championships event was lots of fun.

Wild ride.
February 9th, 2010The opening act for the Winter Olympics was held last weekend at the Camden Snow Bowl in Camden, Maine.

The 20th Annual US National Toboggan Championships glorified the spectacle of winter sports, but required a certain attitude.

It was a little bit Mardi Gras.

And a little bit fierce competition.

With a whoopie pie thrown in to boot.

The pageantry was awe inspiring.

Security was tight.

And the right equipment provided the edge to win.

Team spirit was everywhere, but here are the - – - -> winners.
(Will post more soon.)

In the middle of winter, it’s hard to imagine what the future will bring in a relatively short time.

Having four seasons is like moving to an entirely new place every few months.

Amazing!
Winter shadows.
January 26th, 2010
The northern winter sun sits decidedly low on the horizon.

And paints long, dark, dramatic, shadows on the snow.

Who says winter lacks excitement?
